Risk The Six
A post apocalyptic novel
Ben Beaufort just survived the apocalypse and it’s been the easiest part of his night. There’s another scheduled in two hours, an immortal monster called a nect is stalking the caravan, and food just ran out.
Just a typical day in the Great Massachusetts Desert ever since the nects destroyed his home. A single beacon keeps hope alive: at the end of a long road lies HOPLON, city within a mountain and humanity’s last bastion against the monsters and the apocalypse that comes every six hours.
When Ben arrives at HOPLON’s gates, his combination of grit, desperation, and radiation poisoning convinces a hiring manager that he could have worth to this elite society, at least as a political pawn. He is given the chance to try out for the brutal entrance exam to join the elite Rangers: the only force capable of killing the nects. It seems that if Ben can just pass one impossible test, a long life of full bellies and maybe even friends who won’t be torn to pieces awaits. But, the harder Ben tries and the closer the Rangers’ leaders come to realizing that their token invitation may actually lead to an outsider blemishing their ranks, the more dangerous life inside the mountain becomes. Navigating poverty, hostile politicians, and familiar terrorists, Ben slowly realizes that he must choose to bite the hand that feeds or be smothered by it. But behind every potential ally, dire consequences loom for Ben and the future of other outsiders like him.
