Dr. Plamen V. Petrov is a technology leader, researcher, and innovator who combines deep expertise and hands-on experience in complex real-time systems, artificial intelligence and agentic systems to develop predictive analytics, decision support and knowledge-intensive software for national security applications.
Dr. Petrov is a Lead Scientist at RTX BBN Technologies, an elite research and development organization with strong track record in the defense industry, and most notably at DARPA. He joined BBN’s Analytics and Machine Intelligence group with the objective to grow and expand its proven success in semantic knowledge management with applications of AI and probabilistic reasoning to all-domain command control. At BBN, Dr. Petrov has served as PI and Co-PI on a number of DoD, and IC projects, including IARPA Open Source Indicators, DARPA XData, DARPA Causal Exploration, DARPA LogX, and most recently, ONR Science of AI.
Prior to joining BBN, Dr. Plamen Petrov was an Executive VP and CTO at 21st Century Systems, Inc. (21CSI), a software R&D firm specializing in transitioning high-risk/high-reward research to commercial applications. During his tenure at 21CSI, Dr. Petrov stood up a strong research and software engineering organization from the ground up. He participated in the business since its very inception as a university-based start-up and has contributed to the company’s growth and success in the areas of software agents, agent-based decision support, command and control applications, and intelligent systems. As an executive at 21CSI, Dr. Petrov was in charge of all aspects of technology and intellectual property development and has lead numerous highly competitive awards of Department of Defense –funded Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) programs. Dr. Petrov was also instrumental in the development of the company’s core software infrastructure and intelligent-agent toolkit, called AEDGE®.
Dr. Petrov has published his work in over 30 peer-reviewed conferences and journals and has participated in numeral inventions and patents. He has been involved as a mentor and judge at several ACM Collegiate Programming Contests. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and the ACM.
