Martin Lund

New York, New York, United States

I hold a Ph.D. in Jewish studies from Lund University in Lund, Sweden. My thesis, titled Rethinking the Jewish–Comics Connection, is a study of configurations of identity in American mainstream comics by Jewish writers and a critical dialogue with the extant literature on the subject. In it, I situate the comics studied within historical American identity formations and Jewish American and American history, arguing that the oft-claimed Jewish–comics connection most clearly emerges as an expression of what it meant for the discussed writers to be Jewish Americans in their own time.

I am currently a Swedish Research Council International Postdoc at Linnaeus University in Växjö, Sweden. My main research interests are religion and comics, the representation of race and ethnicity in popular culture, and the role that the specific ethno-racial and socio-political conditions of geographical place play in textual production. I have published articles and reviews in academic and popular science journals on a range of subjects. My current research focuses on representations of New York City in American comics. I post peripheral thoughts and ramblings on this subject on my blog Redrawing the New York–Comics Relationship. Occasional musings from my continued engagement with the topic of religion and comics appear on the blog Gods in the Gutters or on Sacred & Sequential, the home of collective of scholars of the intersections between comics and religion of which I am a member. I am also an editor of the Scandinavian Journal of Comic Art, a member of the Graphic Justice Research Alliance, and an ordained Dudedist Priest.

I am available for speaking engagements and writing assignments. Please e-mail me any queries or requests.
