Though she didn’t realize it, Rebecca Roth spent much of her career preparing for her current position as image coordinator and social media specialist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

Rebecca studied documentary photography at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) before she started at NASA nearly 8 years ago. Early in her career, Rebecca worked as a photojournalist and then photo editor for newspapers, including Roll Call; magazines, including USA Weekend; and National Geographic’s Television and Film Division.

Passionate and enthusiastic about sharing NASA’s compelling images, Rebecca’s work is motivated by collaborating with very talented people at the intersection of communications and science. One of NASA’s mandates is to share with and educate the public about its research and exploration, and to reach a greater number of the people, Rebecca started the NASA Goddard Instagram account, Twitter account and expanded its Flickr site. The approach has worked. The social media team at Goddard won a Shorty Award in 2014 in the government division, which is like winning an Oscar for social media.

In her free time, Rebecca tries to keep up with her two young children, and maintains a passion for photography, roving the globe in search of the next great photo. Some of her favorites have come from Rwanda, Uganda, Galapagos Islands, France, Greece, England and Australia to name a few.
