Sonja Tobey

Vinita, Oklahoma

Rev. Dr. Sonja Tobey is an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church and has been under appointment in the Oklahoma Conference since 2000. Prior to being appointed to Vinita, she has served in Canton, Union City and Cogar, Pond Creek, and Cushing.

Dr. Tobey first felt a calling to ministry when she was a senior in high school in Midwest City, Oklahoma, although she did not fully understand nor follow her call into ministry for another fifteen years. During this time, she primarily worked as a legal assistant in Oklahoma City. Dr. Tobey earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Nazarene University, and graduated cum laude with a Master of Divinity Degree from Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She most recently has earned her Doctorate of Ministry in Pastoral Leadership with an emphasis in Homiletics from Phillips Seminary. Her doctoral work focused on Teaching Preaching to Lay Preachers and Local Pastors in the United Methodist Church.

Dr. Tobey has a great passion for preaching and teaching. Her next work will be writing a book on the importance of laity in the future of the church.
