Ricardo Barros Lourenço is a Ph.D. Candidate in Geography at McMaster University’s School of Earth, Environment & Society, where his research integrates Geosciences and Computer Science. His doctoral thesis focuses on the use of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) for the attribution of change detection in remotely sensed data.

He is the Communications Editor for the journal Environmental Data Science (Cambridge University Press) and conducts his research at Professor Alemu Gonsamo’s Remote Sensing Lab.

Previously, Ricardo worked for a decade at Banco do Brasil, leading Research, Development, and Innovation initiatives for the Agribusiness sector. His academic background includes affiliations with the University of Chicago, DePaul University, Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), and Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP).

An Associate Member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, he has presented his work at the Google Earth Engine User Summit and the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, where he received the Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA).
