Reinout Kleinhans (PhD)

I am an Associate Professor in the Neighbourhood Change research group at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (chair: Prof. Maarten van Ham).

Research

My research interests are urban regeneration, self-organisation, social capital, online-offline citizen engagement, social media, collective efficacy, and participatory planning. I am leading a three-year study on the role of community enterprises ("wijkondernemingen") in the context of government retrenchment from urban regeneration, and the changing relationships between citizens and governments. My other research fascination is the potential of social media, virtual platforms and mobile technology to foster citizens' engagement and participation in neighbourhood governance.

In our research group, I co-supervise five PhD researchers who are working on the following topics:

Long-term neighbourhood change

Causes and consequences of segregation

A life-course perspective on neighbourhood effects

Urban regeneration and forced residential relocation in the city of Shenyang (China)

Housing allocation systems and consequences

I have published more than 23 academic journal articles and 15 edited books and book chapters. I have also co-edited several books. Click here for a complete list of my publications. Teaching and invited lectures

I teach master courses in urban geography and strategies of urban regeneration, and a bachelor course in empirical research methodology. I am a regular invited speaker for professionals working in local and national government or housing associations.
