Sara Ackerman

As an undergraduate student at New York University, Sara Ackerman took advantage of many opportunities to volunteer with local community service organizations. Throughout the final three years of her studies at NYU, Ackerman worked as a Dorot volunteer, visiting an elderly woman every week to bridge gaps between generations. In fall 2011, she served as the Campus Volunteer Coordinator for the Dorot-NYU Program.

In the summer of 2009, Sara Ackerman participated in the American Jewish World Service Volunteer Summer program in El Salvador. Ackerman spent seven weeks in an impoverished village, where she helped to build a community center for a local non-governmental organization. She also studied several texts, using a Jewish perspective to tackle issues of social justice. In the springs of 2010 and 2011, Sara Ackerman served on the committee of Manicure for a Cure, an annual fundraiser that supports breast cancer research. In recognition of her efforts with Manicure for a Cure, she received the Bronfman Center Community Service Award.

Aside from her volunteer pursuits, Sara Ackerman held a number of internships, including a summer internship in 2011 with WaterAid America. She also completed an internship with the UJA-Federation of New York, Caring Commission, where she organized donor and recipient information and helped to coordinate a department-wide conference. In 2009, Ackerman served as a Development Intern with Uri L'Tzedek in New York City.

Sara Ackerman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Metropolitan Studies from NYU. She completed undergraduate courses on a variety of topics, including Approaches to Metropolitan Studies, Cities in a Global Context, and Cultural Politics of Sustainable Cities.
