I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1974 at the age of 13 in March of my Freshman year at Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, IN.
I have been active on some level all of my life and have always coached sports with success.
I have been riding bicycles since 1967 with my first race on a bannana seat Sears 3 speed around the old VO Isom Elementary school in Greenwood, IN.
In 2007 I decided to kick my cycling up a notch and became a dedicated rider logging more than 8,000 miles and completing several 100 mile plus rides for the first time. (before this 10 miles was an epic ride for me)
I raced in numerous bicycle races and triathlons and renewed my love for fitness at the age of 47. I currently engage in ultra marathon cycling events and have found my true calling as a coach, working with every kind of athlete from total novice to world competative on team USA.
Why I coach
- first of all, I want to share my love for fitness and all the metal and physical health benefits that come along with that. I particularly enjoy encouraging people with diabetis of all kinds to be physically active - not so that they can live longer, but with a better quality of life overall, after all we have no guarentee of tommorrow.
- I want to raise money for cure research, while I am a coach for the JDRF Indiana state bicycle team, I am not limited to that enterprize only when it comes to raising funds on a bike.
- I want to be able to earn a living in my retirement from my day job, doing the things I love - being active, and helping others achieve live the best quality of life possible and realize their dreams.
I have been successful and see progress on a daily basis towards all of the above objectives.
I curently have a number of projects in the works that are working towards a couple of other objectives I have found to be worthwhile on my journey
- Coaching the Lambda Chi Alpha Little 500 cycling team at Indiana University for 2014
- Indiana Cure Racers - Central Indiana Developmental Bicycle Race Team
- JDRF Ride to Cure Indiana state team
- Meetup Beginner and Intermediate cycling group - currently over 700 members of all levels with many progressing to advanced levels
That's all they give me room for here, about knows I like to talk about myself :)
