Steven Sater

Acclaimed Tony and Grammy Award-winner Steven Sater underwent a life-altering event that marked an epoch in his career. One morning, Steven Sater awoke to find his apartment on fire. Left with no other egress, he leaped from his balcony, plummeted to the ground below, and severely injured his spine, arms, and wrists. Steven Sater's brush with death caused him to examine his life and realize that he wanted to begin a career in the arts.

After studying English literature at Princeton, Steven Sater began work with a literary agency while writing plays in his spare time. At the same time, Steven Sater joined the Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai. His involvement with the organization led him to meet his wife, Lori, and his musical partner, Duncan Sheik.

Together, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik developed a number of successful musical productions, with Spring Awakening as their most notable work to date. Spring Awakening, which was Steven Sater's first Broadway musical, won a number of Tony awards, such as Best Book and Original Score Written for the Theater and Best Musical. Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik are currently working on The Nightingale, directed by The Laramie Project creator Moisés Kaufman.
