THE PHDMOM: PASSION, HEART, AND DEDICATION

A.N.K. WILSON picture

Andrea N. King Wilson is the founder of THEPHDMOM, a nonprofit agency designed to broaden the horizons for student parents, reinforce the importance of higher education for student parents, and encourage student parents, and women in particular, to enroll in and complete advanced degrees. She received her BA in African American Studies from the University of California Davis, and is currently a Ph.D.  candidate in U.S. History at the University of California Davis. Her research interests are in race, gender, and sexuality during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She is currently completing her dissertation on African American women’s re-articulation of racial and gender norms in San Francisco from 1863-1941. Andrea's interest in helping women excel in advanced degrees programs stems from her experience as single parent during her undergraduate and graduate career. It was during the course of Andrea's studies that she realized that while most colleges promote diversity amongst their student populations, finding support for such diverse groups as student parents can be difficult, even when resources are readily available. Andrea believes that given the the proper academic and social support, student parents, and specifically mothers, can be successful, vibrant parts of the academic community. To this end Andrea is dedicated to creating a virtual space where student parents can find resources, support, and encouragement in their pursuit of higher education. Andrea is married to Gerry Wilson and has two wonderful boys Jason and Jordan, ages 12 and 8 months.

ACADEMIC CONSULTING

As an advocate of higher education, Andrea Wilson, in conjunction with THEPHDMOM, provides one-on-one academic consulting with students and families seeking help in navigating the college admissions process and in evaluating and correcting academic challenges. Students at any level are encouraged to seek academic consulting to facilitate the college admissions process and to develop skills that can improve areas of their lives such as time management, note taking, study skills and test taking.
