Valarie Duran

University of San Francisco, B.A. Media Studies, Emphasis: Video Production, Minor: Film Studies

Ten years ago, Valarie said farewell to San Jose, California and moved north to the big city by the bay, San Francisco. After she graduated cum laude in 2007 with a B.A. in Media Studies from USF, she promised herself to live by the school’s social justice mission and make the world a better place.

She turned to her passion in education and volunteered with the Peace Corps in Macedonia as an English Language Resource Teacher to exchange cultures and inspire students through the art of storytelling. From this rewarding experience abroad, she's learned she strongly believes in using film and theatre as vehicles to build students' foreign language literacy skills, self-esteem and awareness of the world around them. Since then, she's worked independently alongside Kontent Films, Campfire Creative, Remedy Editorial, Redford Center, StageWrite and many others.

Through still and moving images, she strives to capture beauty in diverse cultures, be a voice for social justice and empower women and children around the world. Her work takes her across the United States, Latin America and Western Europe, where she has the privilege to document individuals positively participating in life. And soon, she's off to earn a master’s degree in International Education at NYU, with plans to design and lead children’s arts programs that bridge cultures through storytelling.
