Winner of individual Learning Technologist of the Year 2022 award from the Association for Learning Technology (UK).

I've been lecturing on Built Environment Programmes in Higher Education since 2007. The modules that I currently teach in the Atlantic Technological University (Galway) include 'Academic and Professional Skills', ‘Land Surveying’, 'Surveying and Digital Terrain Modelling', 'Environmental and Energy Sustainability', ‘Research Methods’ and 'Advanced Civil Engineering Software'.

I was awarded a Doctorate of Education in March 2020. My research topic focused on the design, implementation and impact of a digital open badges scheme on a Civil Engineering degree. The findings show that digital open badges increase motivation due to interest, promote engagement by incentivising and rewarding peer learning and attendance, and offer a mechanism for preparing for employment.

I value digital open badges as a means of credentialing achievements and behaviours that may otherwise go unrecognised in the traditional format of a simplistic percentage final grade.

I act as “Digital Badge Champion” for the Atlantic Technological University. In this role I design and deliver workshops and offer consultations for colleagues wishing to learn about best-practice for digital open badges. I have delivered workshops locally, nationally and internationally.

If you are interested in knowing more about using digital open badges then please get in touch and we will arrange a consultation.
