William N. Kelley

A respected medical researcher with more than three decades of professional experience, Dr. William N. Kelley has held affiliation with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine since 1989. Over the years, he has held a variety of roles and responsibilities, including inaugural CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and past dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. William N. Kelley currently serves as professor of medicine and is engaged in health care reform work that seeks to improve cost, delivery, and quality of care for Americans.

In his paper “Academic Medicine and Real Health Care Reform,” Dr. Kelley notes that the Clinton Health Initiative spurred early-1990s efforts by academic health systems to improve all around care dynamics and to take on patient financial risk. These regional systems helped set in place electronic medical records and algorithm-driven “best practice” functions and are a potentially effective foundation for a national health care system. Dr. William N. Kelley has received a number of recognitions in his field, including the Kober Award and Medal from the Association of American Physicians and the Phillips Award and Medal from the American College of Physicians.
