xalwocrafts

Xalwo (pronounced Halwo/Halwa) comes from the Somali word used to describe a traditional Somali confectionery. It is also the name of my paternal grandmother.

The inspiration behind Xalwo Crafts came from having many conversations with my mother who spent her childhood as a pastoral nomad. As a child of the Somali diaspora my upbringing was poles apart from my mother's and learning about her past gave me an insight into the Somali nomadic community and Somali Material Arts. I had unearthed a part of Somali history and culture to which up until recently I had no knowledge or interactions with.

The aim of Xalwo Crafts is to provide a learning resource to a wonderful part of Somali heritage and culture that is unfortunately is not documented or shared enough.

I hope you enjoy this page as much as I have enjoyed creating it. If you have any queries, please feel free to get in touch via the links below.
