John grew up in Flint, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan and Princeton Theological Seminary. While working full-time as a minister, he returned to Princeton Seminary, receiving a D.Min. degree in 1996.
Since early 2002, he has served as Pastor/Head of Staff to the First Presbyterian Church, Edwardsville, Illinois, on the northeastern edge of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Previously, he served as Associate Pastor of Westminster Presbyterian, Springfield, Illinois; and Plymouth Congregational Church, Wichita, Kansas. He began his career as Pastor of a small congregation in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
John enjoys preaching and writing, and has authored sermon reviews and articles in church publications. The congregation he serves is nearing the end of a journey to build a new facility. In the community and larger church, John has led a variety of boards and committees, patiently but persistently guiding groups toward goals consistent with their mission.
John is married to Therese Barnes Hembruch, an award-winning middle-school teacher and choreographer. They have two married children: Benjamin (and Jocelyn) , a music teacher near Owensboro, Kentucky; and Emily (and Tyler), a social worker living on the Mississippi side of Memphis, Tennessee.
