Achilleas D. Zapranis is Associate Professor of Finance & Neural Systems, Vice Rector of Economic Planning and Development and Chairman of the Research Committee, at the University of Macedonia of Economic and Social Sciences, Thessaloniki, Greece. A regular speaker at international conferences, he holds a PhD in Decision Science from London Business School (1997), a Master's degree in Computer Science from University College London (1992) and a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Aristotelian University, Thessaloniki (1989). He has been a member of the visiting faculty at the Graduate Programme in Decision Sciences (Specialisation in Financial Engineering) and the Financial Engineering Research Centre (FRC) at the Athens University of Economics and Business, during the period 1999-2000.
A prolific writer, he has published several research papers in leading scientific journals (Neural Networks, Expert Systems with Applications, Neurocomputing, Journal of Forecasting, etc.). He has also authored three monographs on the subject of neural modelling in financial/business applications (Kleidarithmos 2005, Springer-Verlag 1999, Springer-Verlag 2012 – the latter two were co-authored with professor A. Refenes, and Dr A. Alexandridis respectively). His classes include undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Macedonia and during the period 1999-2000 at the Athens University of Business and Economics,is teaching subjects include computational finance, derivatives, financial engineering advanced forecasting methods and risk management, etc.
So far he has consulted several leading financial institutions e.g., Atos (Paris), Rockport (London), Hermes Investment Management (London), etc on using neural network systems together with traditional approaches in the context of financial risk management. He has quite extensive hands-on experience in the Stock Market, having served as a Managing Director and member of the Board of Directors in one of the leading brokerage firms of northern Greece. He has also served in the Board of Directors of Thessaloniki's Innovation Zone.
