AJ Faas, Ph.D.

A.J. Faas is a sociocultural anthropologist whose research focuses on practices of exchange, social organization, and politics in contexts of environmental crisis – disasters, displacement and resettlement, development, and violent conflict. He has conducted research in Mexico, Ecuador, the Great Rift Valley in East Africa, and the United States. His work has been featured in several peer-reviewed journals, including Human Organization,Human Nature, Economic Anthropology, Ethnology, Civil Wars, Development In Practice, and Mountain Research and Development. A.J. is the Vice President of the Southwestern Anthropological Association (SWAA). He is a founding member of the Risk and Disaster Topical Interest Group at the Society for Applied Anthropology and its co-chairperson for 2014 and 2015. In addition to his academic work, A.J. has also served as a consultant for non-profits,universities, community-based initiatives, and private business.
