Theater Teacher, Director, and Education and Engagement Director in New Orleans, Louisiana

Alex Ates is a New Orleans native who’s the education and engagement director of The NOLA Project. He has directed the regional premieres of Shiner, Sive, She Kills Monsters, and CHOPS. Under his leadership, The NOLA Project has formed partnerships with Lusher Charter School, The Irish House, The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC), and St. Anna’s Episcopal Church/Anna’s Place. He conceived, produced and directing The Shakespearean Jazz Show at New Orleans Shakespeare, ArtsEmerson, Outside the Box, and Off-Broadway. He also produced and directed Chasing Ballerinas with Quinn Marcus which toured at Tulane, Emerson, and Off-Broadway, where it had an award-winning run at the United Solo Festival. In 2013, Alex collaborated with Donnie Welch on Leaving Dynamite, a slam poetry monologue that was livestreamed on Howlround (where he has also written articles). He is on the theater faculty at Lusher Charter School and serves as the PreK-8 Network Chair and 2017 Conference Chair of the American Alliance for Theater and Education. He is also a member of Actor’s Equity. As an actor, Alex frequently collaborates with The New Orleans Shakespeare Festival and The NOLA Project.
