Alice Coghlan

Director and Writer in Dublin, Ireland

Hire me

Hi there, I'm Alice Coghlan, Artistic Director of Wonderland Productions. I live with my young family in Rush, North County Dublin. I am passionate about new writing for the stage and screen.

I was invited to join The Abbey Theatre, the National Theatre of Ireland's Literary Department in 2006, when the then Literary Director liked my dramaturgy work on Ancient Greek theatre on The Bacchae of Baghdad, on which I assistant directed.

I was delighted and soon had my reader code name and was seeing every production and talking through all things writing at our monthly panel meetings. I loved my twelve years at the Abbey and read over a thousand new plays there, but our work was of necessity anonymous – we never knew the writer's names nor they ours. Now my work at the Abbey is finished for the moment, I'm very keen to publicly offer my script reading services in person in Dublin through the Irish Writer's Centre of which I'm a Professional Writer member or through my theatre company

Through my professional network, longer term, I can also organise workshops with actors, or staged readings for a play with professional actors. This can even develop to a full production in Dublin. For instance I developed then directed A Tourist's Guide to Terrorism by Colman Higgins at the Edinburgh Festival in this way.

If you're thinking of hiring me as your Dramaturg, it may also interest you to know that I hold a First Class Honours in Drama & English from Trinity College Dublin, with a scholarship year at The University of California at Berkeley and a MA in Theatre Directing. I wrote, directed and then extensively toured Sylvia’s Quest & Life Shop till you Drop!I have directed over 70 shows and am a qualified drama teacher.

And I know all about the challenges of writing as I write myself. Here is link to my most recent play, The Jonathan Swift Audio Walk commissioned by St Patrick's Cathedral for the Jonathan Swift Festival 2019.

I speak Czech and Italian and intermediate French. So far I have written four play and one opera translations, so I can offer some advice on this. As a Staff Director I've also loved translating to and from from Italian for singers in opera rehearsal. I have also adapted classic books for the stage.
