Hire me

Hi there, I'm Alice Coghlan, Artistic Director of Wonderland Productions. I live in Dublin 8, and am passionate about new writing for the stage and screen.

I joined The National Theatre of Ireland's Literary Department in 2006. I was asked to become an Abbey Theatre Literary Reader as the Literary Director was impressed by my dramaturgy work on Ancient Greece in rehearsals on The Bacchae of Baghdad, on which I assistant directed.

I was delighted and soon had my reader code name and was seeing every production and talking through all things writing at our monthly panel meetings. My favourite part of my role was what I would come to call the exercise of 'diagnosis and prognosis' when writing our extensive script reports. It is such a thrill to nail why a play is, or is mostly not, quite yet working. Every script teaches you something new, and so with every one, one is better able to serve the next writer who had also already achieved so much by finishing a script and sending it in to their National Theatre.

I loved my twelve years at the Abbey and read over a thousand new plays there, but our work was of necessity anonymous – we never knew the writer's names nor they ours. Now my work at the Abbey is finished for the moment, I'm very keen to publicly offer my script reading service in person in Dublin through the Dublin Writer's Centre of which I'm a professional writer member or directly through mentoring online.

Through my professional network, I can also organise workshops with actors, or staged readings for a play with professional actors. This can even develop to a full production in Dublin. For instance I developed then directed A Tourist's Guide to Terrorism by Colman Higgins at the Edinburgh Festival in this way.

You can learn lots more about my wider work as a theatre maker through the website of my theatre company Wonderland Productions. However it may interest you to know that I hold a First Class Honours in Drama & English from Trinity College Dublin, with a scholarship year at The University of California at Berkeley and a MA in Theatre Directing. I wrote, directed and then extensively toured Sylvia’s Quest & Life Shop till you Drop!I have directed over 70 shows and am a qualified drama teacher.

I speak Czech and Italian and have written 4 play translations.
