Born near Dresden in Saxon Switzerland, famous for its landscape and rock climbing spots. Moved to Berlin and visited schools with extended language profiles. Studied physics at Freie Universität Berlin with the minor aviation at the Technische Universität Berlin. Went to the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas in Rio de Janeiro to investigate high temperature superconductors for his diploma thesis. Started to work on his PhD as researcher within the SFB "Complex Nonlinear Processes" of the German Science Foundation. Finished graduate studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he investigated nonlinear phenomena like multistability and complex synchronization processes. Now works at Columbia University in New York, trapping and counting single Krypton atoms for the Xenon Dark Matter Project. Speaks German, English, Portuguese and a bit of Russian.
