I grew up in and around the ocean. I re-brushed the duck blind and went ghost shrimping and clamming with my Dad. I spent hours in the kitchen with my Mom. I had a banner childhood and learned to love food and music.
I rebelled against my rock-n-roll Dad and country Mama by majoring in classical voice and running after an opera career for the first 26 years of my life. I did a lot of singing in a lot of places. I was based in LA for 10 incredibly long years. It was pretty much how you imagine it, only with more castles, ballgowns, 1099 forms, auditions, headshots, maestros, recitals and abject poverty. It was fun. It was soul-crushing.
I got tired and retired after I became a MASTER OF MUSIC. That is in all caps because I worked hard for it. As useless as it is, I'm proud that I saw it through. After finishing my MASTER OF MUSIC in Southern California I moved back to my beloved Petaluma so I could work in the food industry. I got a job babysitting the sales staff at a seafood company and quickly fell back in love with the ocean. I eventually became the Quality Control Manager of this not-so-little seafood company and made a habit out of killing Listeria and banishing e. coli.
I had the good fortune of attending Eat Retreat, a gathering of thirty or so creative food professionals, whose passion and drive led me to form Siren Fish Co. Siren sources sustainably harvested local seafood and gets it to the beautiful people who appreciate that sort of thing. We have over 500 subscribers and we buy over ten tons of local seafood every year. I am married to the handsome and talented Tobias Barr. In October 2012 we welcomed our sweet chunk of a baby, Theo Barr. He's pretty much the best. I still love to unleash on unsuspecting microphones and vocally flirt with string quartets.
