Austin Matias Bacong
San Diego, California, United States
Hello, my name is Austin and I'm a recent Physiology and Neuroscience B.S graduate from the University of California San Diego, Class of 2015. I'm fortunate to say that my college experience has given me the realization that I want to support the health of others within the unique sphere of influence a PA has in the field of health. I will make a difference in healthcare and work towards alleviating the interconnections healthcare disparities has with other social justice issues that are destructive to society.
I'm passionate about student affairs/student wellness, music, social justice, and health. I've made a difference in student life as the Senior Team Leader for Revelle College's Emerging Leaders Program and as the Student Representative for the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Revelle College. I've continued my passions as a musician, performing as a lead trumpet in UCSD's Wind Ensemble. Learning more about Social Justice inspired me to do more by going on service learning trips to the countries of Guyana and Peru of South America with Alternative Breaks; we worked on the social justice issues of Health, Homelessness, & Community Development in Guyana, and Female Empowerment, Education, & Poverty in Peru. I've also learned about the multiple sides of health, from the research side as a laboratory assistant working on the effect of the anti-transformative nature of reversible phosphorylation and its relationship to oncogenes; as well as in direct patient care as a Clinical Care Extender in the departments of Medical Acute Care, Outpatient Surgery-Endoscopy/Post Anesthetic Care, Geriatric Psych, ICU/IMC, and Emergency Medicine in the Palomar Pomerado Health System. In this last year of my undergrad, I've been given the opportunity to serve as the UCSD Pre-Physician Assistant Student Organization's President, educating students about the PA profession and providing opportunities for further career clarification.
