Dr Barbara Neuhofer is a Senior Lecturer in Experience Design and Head of Experience Design at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, Austria.

Before joining Salzburg, Barbara was working as a Lecturer in Tourism and Hospitality Management and as MSc Hospitality Programmes Leader at Bournemouth University, UK.

Barbara researches, teaches, writes and speaks about technology-enhanced customer experiences and explores how technologies transform and shape the way contemporary, consumer-driven and dynamic experiences are co-created. Barbara’s latest research looks at the ‘flipside’ of technology. She explores the idea of (dis)connectivity in tourism and leisure contexts and analyses how digital technology blurs the line between travel, life and work domains.

Barbara has published over 20 academic journal articles, book chapters and conference papers on tourist experiences, co-creation, digital technologies and smart tourism and (dis)connectivity in travel experiences and the wider services marketing context. Barbara frequently delivers invited presentations and has shared her work at over 40 academic conferences and industry events around the globe.

For her academic achievements to date, Barbara received the prestigious ITT PhD Student of the Year 2013 Award and was selected as one of the 15 world’s best PhD students in management in 2013 at the International PhD Student Competition 2013. Barbara received several further international awards for her research and teaching practice.

Barbara serves on the board of directors of IFITT – International Federation for IT and Travel & Tourism as Treasurer and Director of IFITT Next Generation.

University-educated in the UK, Barbara received a BA (Hons) and an MA in Tourism Management from the University of Derby and holds a PhD in Tourism Services Marketing and Management from Bournemouth University. Barbara also holds a PGCert in Higher Education Practice from Bournemouth University and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
