A leading rheumatologist, Dr. Brent Appleton has dedicated his career to excellence in scholarship, teaching, and practice. Certified as a rheumatology specialist by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Appleton is licensed to practice medicine in California, Michigan, and Washington. He has worked with patients experiencing ailments and chronic illnesses such as lupus, vasculitis, osteoporosis, and Sjogren's syndrome, and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. Throughout his tenure as a medical scientist, Dr. Appleton has earned a number of research grants, including a NSERC Research Fellowship Grant and the National Arthritis Foundation Physician Scientist Award. He has contributed scholarship to professional journals and publications such as Clinical Rheumatology, Arthritis & Rheumatism, and the Journal of Rheumatology. Dr. Appleton’s career includes more than 10 years of global clinical development experience in the biotechnology industry.

He served as Director of Clinical Research and Development in the Respiratory Therapeutic Area of Gilead Sciences, Inc., in Seattle. Prior to accepting that position, he dedicated five years to the international biotechnology firm Amgen, first as Associate Medical Director of Clinical Research on Inflammation, and subsequently as Associate Director and Global Development Director. Committed to educating the next generation of rheumatologists, Dr. Appleton has served as a clinical faculty member in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington and as an attending physician within the UCLA-Olive View Medical Center Rheumatology Clinic. He has also served as a lecturer in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Michigan, where he received the Thomas D. Palella Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Appleton concluded his own medical education at the University of Ottawa, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1995, followed by a medical residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Michigan. While completing his rheumatology fellowship, Dr. Appleton subsequently received a Master of Science in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the university’s School of Public Health.
