Chuck Horton is a lifelong Duluth resident who loves his hometown and consistently works to improve it through community involvement ranging from owning the former Horton’s Gym, mentoring kids, community outreach and advocacy, as well as a run for mayor.

Chuck grew up in his father Archie’s gym, the Western Duluth Boxing Club, learning the art of boxing. After high school Horton joined the army and trained as a Recon Scout, which took him from training in Columbus, Georgia to patrolling the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, the First Gulf War in Iraq, and to a training position along the Mexican border where he taught combat techniques to help catch and dismantle the illegal drug trade.

He returned home in 1994 to open Horton’s Gym, where he trained professional boxers, many becoming State Boxing Champions and winning National Titles. After he retired from boxing he gifted his gym to his protégé, Zach “Jungle Boy” Walters. He also shared his father’s vision of mentoring kids, who were always welcome in the gym. As Horton geared up for a run at the Duluth mayor’s office in 2015, he knew passing down the gym to Walters was the right move. Walter’s continues his mission of mentoring kids in boxing, at the gym, now named Jungle Boy Boxing.

Horton took on the challenge of running for mayor in Duluth with a primary focus on repairing roads, facing the opioid epidemic head on, and improving the business climate of the city. While he was not elected mayor, the experience led him to search for a new path that allows him to help people with his knowledge and experience. That path led him to Partners In Recovery, LLC.

Currently, Chuck Horton feels most able to serve the city of Duluth by his involvement with Partners In Recovery. This outpatient treatment program works with people suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues. As an advocate for Partners In Recovery, Chuck strives to establish and foster relationships within the community to offer their clients as many support services as possible. Partners In Recovery provides numbers of services, all for the purpose of helping clients re-build their lives and ensure they receive the help they need to succeed, long term.

As a person in recovery for 21 years, Partners In Recovery’s mission statement rings true for him, as well as for the clients they serve.
