Dr Claire Thorne

Executive Officer in London, United Kingdom

Hello. I’m Claire.

CV [pdf]

I am a strategist, the right-hand woman to Vice President (Innovation) at Imperial College London, a recovering physicist and - in a past life - was an avid Ballroom and Latin dancer.

I shape innovation and industrial strategy, enterprise and technology transfer at Imperial. I inform and influence Imperial’s President, industry executives and ministers in a corporate-facing 'special adviser/private secretary/Chief of Staff' type role.

I understand how technology can be applied and developed, and have a passion for supporting emerging technology. I operate at C-suite level, with established government and private sector networks. I have deep knowledge of the science and technology innovation ecosystem and domain-specific knowledge of digital economy, smart infrastructure and security and defence.

I ask questions, create, challenge, and build new ventures. I excel at big-picture strategy, ideas generation and quickly making sense of detailed systems. I love my role working across business, policy and research, 'connecting the dots'.

In practice this means: advocating for the institution and representing the Vice President at Boards and events at Westminster and Whitehall and Buckingham Palace; driving strategic engagement with public and private sector partners; spotting new collaboration opportunities; writing strategic reviews; hosting state visits; and designing and delivering Executive Education.

I operate in a strategic office where our pace and energy is akin to a start-up environment but set in the context of a complex, multi- and inter-disciplinary, global science and technology organisation. I am also seconded to a UK government department to support NEDs and develop innovation strategy.
