Darcey Morris

Darcey West Morris is a visiting instructor at Towson University while she completes her doctorate in Media Studies at Georgia State University. She has a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Georgia State University and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from the Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia. She has over five years professional experience in public relations working at various agencies, non-profit organizations, and even a brief tenure in New York City at CBS Television. Courses routinely taught include: Media, Culture & Society, Introduction to Mass Communication, Social Media: Theories & Impact, Introduction to Public Relations, Public Relations Writing, Critical History of Radio and Television, and Television Analysis.

Morris is currently writing a dissertation, which explores how cable network branding and promotional strategies have evolved in the post-network era due to the rise of new media technologies. Her research interests include feminist media studies, television studies and media industry studies. She has presented research at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, National Communication Association, Flow, and Console-ing Passions, among others. These presentations featured topics such as a paper that examined how the mobile application HBO Go impacts the HBO brand identity and fits in with discourse about quality TV as well as a position paper analyzing advanced advertising technologies and the industrial and cultural implications of such a development.

Recent publications include a paper analyzing contrasting representations of female sexuality in HBO’s Hung, which was published in Communication Review. Additionally, she wrote a chapter in the forthcoming reader, Media Economies, titled “No More Niche – “Widercasting” and Cable’s Broad Move,” which argues cable networks are abandoning the traditional narrowcasting model in favor of attracting a broader segment of the demographic.

While at Georgia State University, Morris worked with Alisa Perren as Associate Editor and Publicity Manager for In Media Res, an online academic journal. In Media Res, a subset of Media Commons, is committed to experimentation with scholarly writing in a digital environment.
