Donald Machen

A judge for the Court of Common Pleas in Allegheny County, Donald Machen has accumulated a wealth of legal experience over the course of his career. In addition, Donald Machen acts as managing principal with Risk Management Consultants, LLC, where he has performed more than 200 audits in the health care field and helped practices optimize their finances by adopting new strategies and models.

After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Donald Machen remained at the institution to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine as well as Master of Science in Dentistry. Later, he continued his education at the University of Health Sciences' School of Medicine, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine. He additionally holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business and a Juris Doctor from the Duquesne University School of Law. Still active in the academic community, he serves as both an Adjunct Professor of Law at Duquesne University, where he teaches health care law, and a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthodontics at the Case Western University Dental School.

Judge Donald Machen initiated his legal career at K&L Gates, LLP, known then as Kirkpatrick & Lockhart. He next acted as special counsel at Rosenberg, Kirshner, PA, prior to becoming general counsel for the American Academy of Head, Neck and Facial Pain. Beginning in 1989, he simultaneously served as the City of Pittsburgh Planning Commissioner and as a Special Mediator and Arbitrator for the Court of Common Pleas. Subsequent to his appointment by Governor Ridge, Donald Machen has won, via election, two 10-year terms as judge in Allegheny Country.
