Helen Ross bio


Helen Ross (nee McKenzie) is an Australian award winning children's poet. Though Helen loves writing children's poetry, she has returned to her first love - acting, and is currently studying a two year Advanced Diploma in Stage and Screen Acting at the Actors Conservatory in Brisbane.

In addiition to kindergarten and primary teaching, Helen taught at TAFE Queensland for 17 years, teaching in the Business Directorate (communication subjects) and language and literacy (ESL) programs.

Since childhood, Helen has been spellbound by the magic of words and books; hence she has been writing for over 30 years. She has undertaken studies in Freelance Journalism, and is the recipient of two Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants in professional development for children's picture book writing and illustration. In September 2013 she completed her four year term commitment on the City of Logan's RADF committee, representing the portfolio of writing. Helen has had many articles published in the children's book industry, and was the first resident journalist (volunteer position) for 'South City Bulletin', a Logan-based community magazine.

Her published children's books include 10 Yellow Bananas, Bubble Gum Trouble and Other Giggle Poetry (both published wiht little Steps, Division of New Frontier) and Santa is in our Chimney. Helen also co-authored A Christmas Tail with children's author, Donna Smith; released in June 2013. Helen's poetry has also been published in short story/poetry collections and for on-line resources. Aside from writing, Helen travels around Australia conducting writing and giggle poetry workshops.

Helen is a Queensland Professional Development Co-ordinator (Honorary) for the Australian Society of Authors, a member of SCBWI Queensland (Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators) and a Book for Kids Ambassador (info at: www.childrenscharity.com.au). She currently lives in Brisbane with her humorous husband and their beloved pets.
