Kamal Nath

A leading figure in the Indian National Congress and the Lok Sabha, Kamal Nath represents his constituents in the Chhindwara district and serves as Union Cabinet Minister of Urban Development. First elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980, Kamal Nath represented the Chhindwara constituency over four consecutive terms before his appointment to the Union Council of Ministers in 1991. For the next four years, Kamal Nath served as Minister of Environment and Forests, during which time he helped develop the National Policy on Ecological Conservation and the Abatement of Pollution, introduced the Environment Audit and Environment Tribunal, and furthered measures to protect vulnerable species of plants and animals. At the end of his tenure as Minister of Environment and Forests, Nath was named Minister of Textiles, in which capacity he greatly advanced India's textile trade and production.

After a two-year absence from government, Minister Nath returned to the Lok Sabha in 1998, where he remains to this day. Since then, Kamal Nath has held membership in the Committee on Finance and Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Mines and Minerals, performed as General Secretary of the Indian National Congress, and served in consecutive roles as Union Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Industry, Road Transport and Highways, and Urban Development.

Minister Nath set the stage for his career while a student at the Doon School, and later, at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce. He also possesses an Honorary Doctorate from Rani Durgavati University, awarded to him in recognition of his contributions to the public sector.
