Kristin Weis

Ahoy there! Here's a bit about me.

I'm an astute researcher and consultant, passionate about resilience research, coastal management, sustainable development, and conflict management. I work to improve how we use and conserve our natural environment.

I have a Master of Resource Management (MRM) from the University of Akureyri in Iceland, a BA in International Affairs from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, and a bunch of government consulting and social innovation experience in between. Specifically, my MRM focused on Coastal and Marine Management, which I studied at the University Centre of The Westfjords in Ísafjörður, Iceland.

As a Researcher:

I specialize in social-ecological resilience and coastal community tourism. My Master's thesis explored social-ecological resilience and tourism in coastal communities in Dominica. This research was also published as a peer-reviewed book chapter of an edited volume and has been accepted to a peer-reviewed journal. My research interests include social-ecological resilience, coastal communities, coastal and marine tourism, small island developing states (SIDS), youth perspectives, human mobility and migration, environmental peacebuilding, environmental and transitional justice, and natural resource stakeholder conflict.

As a Consultant:

I aim to help shape tourism and coastal management models that benefit local communities and their local ecosystems. One project that has emerged from these efforts is Smart Tourism, as I fondly call it, which helps shape best practices for all of us when we travel as tourists. My popular workshops on sustainable development, tourism, and environmental migration help conflict management professionals, peacebuilders, and policymakers identify related goals and actions that they can apply in their own work. I regularly speak about these topics, including twice as a TEDx speaker.
