About
When I taught secondary school, I used to tell students that they should follow their dreams, that there was more than one road to reach their goal, and that persistence pays off.

Well, here I am in middle age (retired) and following my dream of learning about and making wine!

This passion started 21 years ago when I founded a wine club (The Grape Friends) with a group of 16 friends interested in knowing how to taste wine, which foods to pair with which wines, learning to recognize specific grape characteristics or flavour/aroma profiles, and understanding what wines they really liked.

If you wish to know how to start a wine club and conduct wine tastings, ask me!

Now, half way through my program at Niagara College (Winery & Viticulture Technician Program, graduating 2015), I have learned a lot … the technical and creative aspect of making wine and managing a vineyard.

It is a combination of gardening, cooking and science know-how.

Part of this program is to have hands-on experience, a practicum or internship with a winery, so after completing three months at Frogpond Organic Farm & Winery (Niagara-on-the-Lake) where I gained experience in selling wine and working with the winemaker at odd jobs in the cellar, I am in Croatia (Aug. – Nov. 2014), on the island of Hvar, working with Carić Winery (Vino-Hvar) and living the dream.

It’s harvest season (Sept. – Oct.) and I have been picking grapes (by hand), de-stemming, crushing, and babysitting fermenting wines. It is hard work, dirty, with long hours, but I love it!

Here’s to more harvests and winemaking in different countries in the future and to tasting wine (always) – which I will blog about, of course. Cheers!
