American Nomad was released in March 2026.The unfinished story of a journey through decades of change in the way people live, think, feel, and dream. Liz Farrow’s life began in seventies California, filled with sun and surf, but also its underside: deprivation, dysfunction, undiagnosed neurodivergence and discrimination. Rebellion and escape came through fashion, music, travel, and scenes — punk, raves, goth, drugs, and spirituality. In San Francisco, she entered a new world of entertainment and empowering technology. She played her own part in its music scene, working for the legendary Bill Graham Presents, and encountering her favourite musicians. Part of the last “Generation Real,” known as Generation X, Liz became a literal nomad, combining a media career with exploration in North Africa and the Middle East. She ends on a message of hope: whatever life throws at you, memory gives one the power to revive dreams and reconnect with the person who dreamed them.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Liz Farrow’s life has given her a unique perspective on the huge cultural changes of the 1990s and on historical events and ordinary life in the modern Middle East. She was born in San Francisco in the 1970s, and grew up in the surf town of Santa Cruz, California. She left home in her teens and dived into local club and drug scenes, but also – and more lastingly – explored religion and spirituality. She travelled extensively in the 1990s and early 2000s, including the UK, France, the Middle East and North Africa. She moved to San Francisco in 1996, existing on part-time jobs, enrolling at City College of San Francisco. She then got a job with the legendary music promoter Bill Graham Presents (BGP) from 1997 to 2002. Liz had many encounters with leading performers, but working behind the scenes as a woman was tough in the 1990s. She moved to London in 2002 and then made a series of journeys to the Middle East, including spending time with the Bedouins in Jordan’s Wadi Rum, and to Yemen, before its ongoing civil war. She also had a variety of roles at the BBC for 20 years. Liz lives in London with her children, who are twins.
