I was in Squirrel Nut Zippers between 1994 - 1999 and wrote their top-20 hit "Hell," propelling the band to multi-platinum sales. Songs I wrote for the band have appeared in dozens of movies and television shows, including Sesame Street, Sex in the City, Dead Like Me, Sleeps with Fishes, Three to Tango, a Super Bowl ad and the Tony Award-winning Broadway soundtrack for Contact.
After leaving the Zippers, I composed for movies and television, including Lifetime's Lovespring, International, Happily N'Ever After, Japanese make-up giant T'estimo commercials and the Academy Award-nominated Deliver Us From Evil.
I was a contributor to Al Jazeera America (http://america.aljazeera.com/profiles/m/tom-maxwell.html), and have written for Salon, The Oxford American, Our State, Southern Cultures, College Music Journal and The Indy Weekly.
My latest album, "Tom Maxwell & The Minor Drag," is out, along with a memoir: Hell: My Life in the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
