Walter Areia

While Walter Areia goes up and down the hills and stages of Lisbon carrying his distinctive 3-string double bass, in addition to continuing his solo career playing with his new quartet and trio, Areia also actively collaborates with important artists, including Fred Martins, Matteo Saggesi, Larry John McNally, and Karlos Rotsen, and he was also a regular member of Rua das Pretas by Pierre Aderne.

Was a member of Mundo Livre S/A for 13 years, the precursor band of the "Mangue Beat" movement in Recife, which he received, in 2005, from the hands of the Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil, the “Order of Cultural Merit”, and in 2012 won the “Brazilian Music Award” as the best group. As a leader, he has released five albums, the last three of which: Ecology Trio, Areia e Grupo de Música Aberta - "Ao Vivo", and Treze Cordas. He has contributed with international names, such as the Norwegian guitarist Steinar Aadnekvam; Colombian saxophonist Antonio Arnedo and Afrobeat co-inventor, Tony Allen; besides the Brazilians Arto Lindsay, Naná Vasconcelos, Alceu Valença, DJ Dolores.
