Nicholas Mukhtar has built a career that bridges public health advocacy, government consulting, and business management. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, he began his higher education at the University of Dayton on a Chaminade Scholarship and later transferred to Wayne State University, earning his bachelor's degree in 2013. Mukhtar went on to complete dual master's degrees at Johns Hopkins University, graduating in 2017 with specializations in Public Policy and Public Health. His selection as a Bloomberg Fellow at the Bloomberg School of Public Health reflected his commitment to advancing public health through education and policy.

One year after finishing his undergraduate studies, Mukhtar founded Healthy Detroit, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on preventative health. The organization's signature HealthPark initiative, which launched in July 2014, transformed Detroit parks into one-stop wellness centers offering free fitness classes, health screenings, immunizations, and nutritional programs to residents of all ages. Mukhtar explained the philosophy behind this approach: "We chose city parks as our vehicle for building a culture of health because it's the one piece of a community that has no barriers or limitations." During his nearly five-year tenure as CEO, he mobilized over $100 million in funding and grew the organization's annual budget to approximately $15 million by 2017.

Healthy Detroit received national recognition under Mukhtar's leadership. The American Public Health Association named it the National Public Health Organization of the Year in 2017, and the organization's model was highlighted in the U.S. Surgeon General's 2014 report to Congress. Mukhtar also received the Playmakers Changemaker of the Year award in 2015 for his work in community health. His public engagements included speaking at a Washington Post Live forum on community health, addressing the Detroit Mayor's Health Summit at Wayne State University, and introducing U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy at a Detroit event.

After departing Healthy Detroit, Mukhtar transitioned into consulting. He founded Healthy Communities, LLC in Washington, D.C., advising policymakers including Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and contributing to the White House Office of American Innovation. He also established The Mukhtar Group, LLC for private sector consulting. Mukhtar currently leads Tera Strategies from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he serves as senior business management consultant. His work focuses on helping CEOs, medical directors, and business owners with digital transformation and operational systems development. He is fluent in English, Arabic, and Spanish.
