English Instructor and Researcher in Japan
My name is Parisa /pærɪsā/, which is a Persian name meaning “like a fairy”, and easy to remember: “Paris” plus “a” :)
Born and raised in Tehran, I hold a BA in English Language and Literature, an MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), both from Alzahra University, Tehran, Iran, and a PhD in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) from Osaka University, Japan.
Before moving to Japan, I taught English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and General English (GE) courses at Alzahra University.
My research interests include Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Online and Blended Course Design, Mixed, Augmented, and Virtual Realities (MAVR), and recently, Social Justice Education and Equity Studies in Education (SESE).
I currently teach part-time at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, the University of Hyogo, and an English conversation school, Princeford English College. In addition, I am an English tutor at Paper Airplanes (https://www.paper-airplanes.org/), which provides free, one-on-one language and skills instruction to people affected by conflict so they can pursue education, secure employment, and ultimately, rebuild their lives. I also teach for the Hands Up Project (https://handsupproject.org/), which offers online English storytelling lessons to Palestinian and Syrian children in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jordan. I blog about my research and teaching experiences at https://parisamehran.wordpress.com.
Living outside Iran made me an activist trying to dispel stereotypes about my identity and change negative images associated with Iranian people by actively giving talks about the real Iran and the Iranian people behind the news at universities, events, and conferences, and by blogging about the Iranian identity at https://beyondyourstereotypes.wordpress.com/.
Recently, I have started Women of Color in ELT, a movement by Women of Color for Women of Color to come together to build collective power for equity and systemic change: https://womenofcolorinelt.wordpress.com/
