Philip Mattawashish
Deputy Director and Councillor in Mistissini, Québec, Canada
I am a Cree leader, public servant, and author with experience in economic development, youth development, project management, and community leadership.
I currently serve as Deputy Director of Commerce & Industry with the Cree Nation Government, where I support initiatives focused on economic development, entrepreneurship, business growth, and creating long-term opportunities for Cree communities across Eeyou Istchee.
In 2026, I was also elected as a Councillor for the Cree Nation of Mistissini. Serving my community in this capacity is an opportunity I take seriously, with a focus on listening to our people, making thoughtful decisions, and contributing to the long-term strength and well-being of our community.
Throughout my career, I have been passionate about helping people and communities grow. My previous work in youth development and economic development has shaped my approach to leadership: putting people first, building meaningful relationships, thinking long-term, and working collaboratively to turn ideas into action.
My professional development has included studies and training through Harvard Business School Online, McGill University, and other institutions, alongside continued learning in leadership, management, project management, and business.
I am also an independently published author of two books.
My first book, Walking the Leadership Trail, shares lessons and reflections from my own leadership journey, with the hope of encouraging emerging leaders to continue learning, growing, and finding their own way of serving others.
My second book, Becoming Whole: A Cree Journey Through Trauma, Healing, and Purpose, explores my personal experiences with trauma, healing, self-awareness, resilience, and finding purpose. Through personal stories and reflection, the book looks at the importance of doing the inner work needed to heal, grow, and move forward with greater understanding of ourselves.
Whether through my professional work, elected leadership, or writing, my goal remains the same: to contribute meaningfully to the people and communities I serve and to help create opportunities that will benefit future generations.
