Shefali S. Kulkarni
Journalist and Editor in New York, N.Y.
Hello, I’m Shefali S. Kulkarni
I'm an journalist with two decades of experience in reporting, writing, social media, audience engagement and data analysis as well as newsroom strategy.
Most recently, I served as Editor for Digital Storytelling and Training at The New York Times. In this role I trained reporters and editors in the newsroom on the latest digital tools, visual storytelling formats and helped implement new protocols and workflows.
Prior to that role, I was an Operations Editor at The Washington Post, where I helped the Financial and Technology section make their stories as clickable and searchable as possible. Before that, I ran audience engagement and social media for BBC News' North America bureau.
I've worked as the Social Media Editor for Newsweek Magazine, a digital producer for PRX's The World and covered health care policy at Kaiser Health News.
I've also worked at The Village Voice, Daily Beast, Willamette Week, Dallas Morning News, Washingtonian Magazine, The Dalles-Chronicle and the Spokesman-Review.
I enjoy learning as much as I can about how to make sure our newsrooms across the country look just like the country. I'm the former Vice President of the South Asian Journalists Association, a member of the Asian American Journalists Association and the Online News Association.
When I'm not in the newsroom I love to bake, bike ride, meander through farmers markets and binge-watch old sitcoms.
I also speak Marathi and Spanish.
