Trey Layton builds AI infrastructure and the frameworks that tell executives whether their AI investment is working.
He is founder and CEO of a stealth deep-tech AI company developing system-level capability in autonomous intelligence, secure distributed architecture, and large-scale data efficiency. In its first year the company filed 36 patent applications with the USPTO, organized into five invention families, with all priority dates locked. The work proceeds from three assumptions: that AI systems will run distributed rather than centralized, which makes trust between independent parties a design problem rather than an administrative one; that such systems must prove their own integrity continuously rather than be trusted by assertion; and that the cost of moving data between them is a constraint most of the industry still treats as fixed. More than 90 inventions are under development. The filings remain undetailed while in provisional status.
He is also a Partner at Capellas Partners, advising boards, private equity firms, and Fortune 500 executives on AI strategy, technical diligence, and M&A integration. That practice produced three additional patent-pending products — Estate Lens, for provenance-bound engineering estate analysis; Signal, for advisory-grounded multi-source intelligence; and Keel, for self-correcting software — and two published frameworks. The AI Maturity Index assesses enterprise AI readiness across ten operational domains and five stages, with a companion scoring guide that includes an AI-washing detection protocol for boards evaluating the maturity claims made to them. Layton has spent three decades in enterprise infrastructure. As SVP and Chief Technology Officer of VCE, he helped establish converged infrastructure as a multibillion-dollar category and the foundation for hyperconverged systems, working across the Cisco, EMC, VMware, and Intel joint venture. He went on to serve as SVP of Engineering for Data Center Automation at Dell EMC, and most recently as Senior Technology and Product Executive at Penguin Solutions, where he led the organization behind ICE ClusterWare and ClusterWare AIM and directed DevOps operations for some of the world's largest AI superclusters. Earlier roles include NetApp, GE ITS, Cisco Systems, and Eastman Kodak.
He was a student at U.S. Army Intelligence School, served with U.S. Central Command, and is a recipient of the Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. He holds a TS/SCI clearance and lives in Tampa, Florida.
