Small Business Owner and karate instructor in Silver Spring, Maryland
Hello, my name is Viran Ranasinghe and I am known affectionately by my students as Coach V. I am a husband, father, coach, business owner, avid reader and fitness aficionado. I am hopeful this page will help you to learn about my background, passions and aspirations.
I want to start with one simple word: Kaizen. It’s a Japanese term meaning “continuous improvement” and it means a great deal to me. I stumbled upon this term while studying business at the University of Maryland nearly two decades ago. The term spoke to me and perfectly sums up my life philosophy, which is why I named my first business Kaizen Karate.
One of my great life passions is karate. I began training in this ancient art at the early age of five and am now proud to say I hold two black belts in Tang Soo Do and Chinese Kenpo. I have been teaching for decades and opened my own business, Kaizen Karate, in 2003. Though teaching karate may seem like an obvious career for a devout enthusiast, it’s certainly not the path I ever imagined. In fact, it was the culmination of several life hurdles that led me here. I went to college intending to pursue a career in finance. I tried that path, but several bumps in the road, including the financial crisis in 2007, forced me to re-evaluate and realize my true calling.
My greatest pride and passion is my family. My three sons and wife are my absolute top priorities. I constantly am seeking ways to be a better role model and to set a good example for my children. When I do have some down time I love to read, run and exercise. I am proud to say I have run several area races including the Marine Corp. Marathon, Rock n’ Roll ½ Marathon and Cherry Blossom 10k.
I am obsessed with longevity and living a healthy lifestyle. One of my goals is to not just live a long life, but a healthy one fulfilled both inside and out. That being said, I am not done yet growing personally and professionally. I can’t wait to see what the future holds in the years to come.
