Captain Michael Hawley
A Program Manager for Maersk Line, Limited, Captain Michael Hawley served as a United States Navy Officer for more than 30 years. In his current position, Captain Hawley takes charge of business development, value and technical management, and work execution relating to ship maintenance, research, and analysis. Captain Hawley also selects equipment for the 22 vessels under Maersk Line’s management. During his time at Maersk, Captain Michael Hawley has completed several projects. Among others, he spearheaded a program to increase the efficiency of Maersk ships by incorporating shipboard visits to all Maersk ships, and training Captains and Chief Engineers in the latest industry standards for fuel efficiency, safety, and environmental standards. He also supervised the design and installation of a new anti-piracy closed-circuit television security system that utilizes new, secure proprietary software and allows the Captain and crew to observe any boardings. Captain Hawley also submitted a business case analysis that showed the cost savings of reducing the speed of Maersk’s vessels throughout high threat waters, which will ultimately save the company millions of dollars in fuel. This new policy was promulgated immediately. Prior to coming to Maersk Line, Limited, Captain Michael Hawley held administrative roles in the Navy, including serving as the Commanding Officer of an Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer and a Wasp-Class Amphibious Assault Ship. In this capacity, he was responsible for improving occupational workplace safety and developing new practices. Additionally, Captain Hawley spent a year as Commodore of the Navy’s three Afloat Training Commands on the East Coast, which comprised 900 sailors and four commanding officers. He also obtained certification in various engineering and quality assurance procedures. Captain Michael Hawley received his Bachelor’s degree in Ocean Engineering through the United States Naval Academy and later obtained a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies through the College of Naval Command and Staff. During his military service, Captain Hawley received several honors, including multiple Legion of Merits and Meritorious Service Medals.
