My Artist Career
Art has been at the center of my life since I was able to hold a pencil. I was trained in drawing, painting, ceramics and woodworking in art school. My current work is focused on color and space. The recent work utilizes mixed media materials such as hand-made paper, threads, photographs I have shot myself and acrylic or other water-based paint. My creations have been exhibited in museums, galleries and are included in multiple private collections. I even designed an ornament for the White House Christmas tree.
Art Eduction/Teaching/Community Work
In addition to making my own art work, I love to celebrate the creative energy of others! I have worked in the field of education for over twenty years. Whether teaching in a traditional art classroom, acting as an artist-in-residence or connecting visitors to museum collections; I love sharing my passion for art with others. Collaborative Projects In addition to developing my own work, I have also worked with other artists on collaborative projects such as - an exhibition focused on the idea of marriage, a two-year painting and poetry project with an international theme and a photography exhibition exploring Afro-Cuban imagery.
Fellowships and Grants
I have received two "Creative Renewal" grants from the local arts council. These grants each allowed me to spend a year focused on the creative process and allowed me to produce new work. One of these grants was the catalyst for a growing interest in film. Most recently, I began working on a film called "Southern Threads, Northern Footsteps". I hope to complete it soon.
When I was a teacher I also received a "Teacher Creativity" fellowship that provided funds to focus my energy on the creative process.
What does all this mean?
Simply said, I LOVE the arts with all my heart. I am always interested in the processes involved in sparking the imagination. Whether those expressions come from my mind or from others - the power of art (or the arts) remains at the center of my life.
