Catherine Wayland Hilton Head to Coral Gables Florida. Wayland feels blessed to have worked with English As Second Language/ESOL in Hilton Head, South Carolina. “I am excited to get down to Miami as it is the gateway to Latin America, but I have gotten so much experience here in Hilton Head.” Wayland admits however, that her work will not be easy. Wayland leaves Hilton Head as a middle school teacher to begin her PhD work in “Multiculturalism in the Classroom” Wayland says, “Although an incredible personal journey for me, the educational journey for some ESOL students is not pleasant.” As wonderful the outcome of being immersed into a foreign language and becoming bilingual, Wayland says that often the students of Hilton Head were not choosing this path, but were brought to the U.S. as a part of family decision for other reasons, ie safety, economy, etc. So, Wayland worked hard to get her students to feel at home in a foreign country possibly not of their choosing. Wayland was nicknamed “cupcake lady” because she would bring in homemade cupcakes after a very successful week. Wayland’s Beaufort classroom was always filled with rugs, lamps, and pillows. The room seemed to invite a student to be in a comfortable, non-threatening environment to enjoy learning a new language, in a new country. Wayland will take those tools she developed in Beaufort and bring them to help instruct upcoming teachers to make their own ESOL classrooms. holds a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, a Master of Arts in writing and critical theory of literature, and a Master of Science in education and special education. For the past seven years, she has provided languages arts instruction to Beaufort County middle school students in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Since 2010, Catherine Wayland has also served as an English-as-a-second-language instructor.

When she isn’t teaching, Ms. Wayland performs a variety of creative and administrative functions with International Family Magazine (IF).
