Celil Kankaya

Area Swim School Lead in Croydon, UK

"Hi, I’m Celil.
You can pronounce it like "jeh-LEEL". (For more info:http://bit.ly/4kiDleD)

I’ve spent most of my life combining my passion for swimming, education, and supporting people’s development.

My journey began in Canakkale, Turkey, where I felt at home in the water. I spent nearly 8 years as an underwater sports athlete, playing underwater rugby and hockey. My love for the water led me to become a CMAS 2-star scuba diver and later a national swimming referee with the Turkish Swimming Federation, officiating at national and international competitions.

Alongside my sporting career, I studied Business Administration, Marine Biology and completed a Master’s in Marine Sciences and Technology. But it wasn’t just science that inspired me – it was working with people.

I co-founded Canakkale Koza Youth Association, where for over 10 years I worked as a swimming teacher, project coordinator, and youth worker. During this time, I taught children and adults from beginners to advanced swimmers, focusing on water confidence, technique, and safety. I ran inclusive programmes like “No Obstacle Underwater,” so people with disabilities could benefit from aquatic activities. Through this organisation, I worked with over 3,500 young people, organised around 40 EU projects, and delivered over 100 workshops, youth festivals, and events.

Later, I worked for the Canakkale Municipality’s Career Office, where I coached unemployed university students and helped over 700 young people build skills for their future careers. I enjoyed guiding them step by step, much like helping swimmers progress in the pool.

In 2020, I became Project Coordinator for the Karina Marine Culture Centre, leading the creation of a public learning space showcasing marine ecosystems through VR, aquariums, and interactive exhibits. I prepared educational programmes for all ages, from 5 to 70+.

After moving to the UK, I continued teaching swimming with GLL – Better, delivering lessons across Waddon, Thornton Heath, and Kensington leisure centres to both children and adults.

Alongside my role as Area Swim School Lead, I’m starting the STA Level 3 Award in Education and Training course to become a tutor who empowers and inspires swimming teachers, helping them build confidence and teaching skills, just as others helped me.

Teaching, mentoring, and swimming have always tied my work together. Whether in a pool, classroom, or workshop, I believe in the power of learning – and the power of water – to change lives."
