Charles Sun is a visionary IT executive with over three decades of leadership across public and private sectors. He has advanced secure global infrastructure and led transformative digital modernization initiatives that continue to shape the future of the Internet.
Widely recognized as a Patent-Cited IPv6 & Internet Modernization Thought Leader, he authored the landmark 2014 Computerworld article, “Stop Using Internet Protocol Version 4!”—a call to action for next-generation Internet adoption. The article’s enduring influence was formally recognized when it was cited in U.S. Patent 20200220788, underscoring his thought leadership in secure networking and modernization frameworks.
As Technology Co-Chair of the U.S. Federal IPv6 Task Force (2014–2020), he played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. federal IPv6 policy and guiding the government’s transition to IPv6-only infrastructure. He also chaired the Federal IPv6 Technical Roundtable, a monthly forum uniting public- and private-sector experts to coordinate and advance deployment strategies. Within the federal IT community, he gained recognition as a Federal IPv6 Champion, spearheading efforts to eliminate legacy vulnerabilities and enhance cybersecurity through the adoption of IPv6-only solutions.
His pioneering efforts have earned national recognition and numerous accolades, including:

A proven subject-matter expert in Cloud Computing, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Internet of Things (IoT), and large-scale IT modernization, he has held senior leadership roles including:
- Chief of Network Infrastructure Engineering (OBIM), U.S. Department of Homeland Security
- Director of IT Engineering & Operations, U.S. Export-Import Bank
- Senior Advisor for Emerging Technologies & IPv6 Transition Manager, U.S. Census Bureau
He also served as a Branch Chief, leading modernization and cybersecurity initiatives at the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Labor. Earlier in his career, he worked as a senior network engineer and consultant for the University of Maryland, Northrop Grumman, AOL Time Warner, and Georgetown University.
Following his retirement from federal service in 2025, he founded and now leads the Alliance for Universal Computing™(AUC)—a global initiative dedicated to advancing secure, standards-driven, and future-ready computing.
