Craig Butchart
camera operator, Camera Guarantee, and fixed rig director in the United Kingdom
Here's a little bit about me. My technical experience began in February 2004 as a freelance camera assistant and trainee camera operator, working on small Outside Broadcast productions and single camera corporate shoots. After over 3 years in the same genres of work, I took a staff role within a growing Outside Broadcast Facilities company to help facilitate the move towards opportunities working within the biggest sport, music and events within the country. Over the 5 years, I worked my way to become a very versatile staff member, enabling me to work on some very prestigious live multicamera contracts.
The need for new challenges and experiences brought me to return to freelancing in June 2012.
I am currently a regular crewmember on top live football for Sky Sports and have many other live multicamera credits under my belt, from multiple sports to politics, music and entertainment. I have also taken on a specialism working on multiple ‘Fixed Rig’ observational documentaries and reality shows. Broadcasters I have worked for include the BBC, ITV, CH4, CH5, SKY and BT and RTE Ireland. Since the re launch of TV production in late 2020 the year has led me into some new work as well as continuing for my established clients. Since the autumn, I have worked on the British Basket Ball League on Sky Sports, Series 2/3 of ‘The Dog House’ for CH4, The Cabins for ITV2, we had to remotely direct the new series of First Dates Ireland from the UK using an OB truck which maybe a first for fixed rig shows! and most recently I helped consult and operate on CH5’s Skin A & E to help turn it from a PSC filmed surgery into fixed rig coverage. The summer looks busy ahead with work for Discovery at Wimbledon, golf, rugby, a new exciting pilot and more Ariel filming for BATCAM over the coming weeks to kick it off.
A few of my proudest achievements so far include Directing multiple Series of award winning First Dates Ireland for RTE2. Another memorable moment for me was working on ITV’s Release the Hounds horror game show, which won an RTS award in December 2015 for Multi camera Work.
