For as long as I can remember I have always aspired to be an engineer. Throughout my childhood I was constantly testing and improving my abilities with various projects. While I was trying to be an engineer, I was also seeking to achieve the eagle scout rank in boy scouts. Perhaps it was fate that about the time I was looking for my project, a new teacher would arrive at my high school and start a robotics club. Even more that this teacher had a philosophy of teaching STEM by working with charitable organizations. One of the organizations that Dr. Hollers wanted to become involved with fit perfectly with my skills and my desires for my Eagle Project. e-NABLE is a global organization of engineering minded individuals that design and 3D print upper limb prosthetics for children and adults. For my Eagle Project, I would to establish an e-NABLE chapter at my high school. I would then lead the volunteers in that chapter to help 5 people by providing 3D printed hands. I also wanted to set up that chapter so that it would continue after I had left.
During my time as its leader, we were able to help seven people around the world. The chapter continues to help more even now after I have left. The chapter will be another part of the robotics team in which students can practice and learn valuable STEM skills in a way that greatly benefits the community. Not only has this project greatly affected those involved with the program, but it has greatly affected me. This project has given me the opportunity to develop important skills to be used in the real world such as effective communication, leadership, and organization. It also has inspired me to pursue Bio-mechanical engineering in college and as a career. I enjoyed the idea of greatly impacting someone’s life in the way that I did in this project.
