Why hello there, thanks for stopping by! To describe myself a bit, I like to think that I really don't fit into any one box, but a collection of spontaneous thoughts and ideas that fit together.
My passion is for learning, engineering, biology, and most importantly people. The synergy of being able to put these together is what I have had the most fun with in my life and what I want to continue doing!
I have an MSc in Biochemistry with a focus in Cancer Biology, and an in-formal training (>5 years) in Synthetic Biology working and managing projects as diverse as DNA assembly, bio-fuels, environmental remediation, and biosensors for toxins.
I work with education groups such as Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF), geekStarter, Alberta Woman's Science Network (AWSN), MindFuel, Virtual Researchers on Call (VROC), and the Sanofi BioGENEious Competition (SBCC) to expand scientific literacy and knowledge. I am a judge and biosafety reviewer for the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) Competition. I think people are the most powerful part of scientific innovation and empowering them is how we can change the world.
Finally, I am an entrepreneur with an early venture start-up company called FREDsense Technologies out of the University of Calgary. Educating people and learning about our world is great, but wouldn't it be awesome to be able to make real positive change with what everyone is learning? Our company focuses on developing portable biosensors that you can use to detect chemical toxins in your water.
